Quitting is hard. Join the Freedom from Smoking program to learn how to successfully overcome your tobacco addiction.
Freedom from Smoking is a 7 week smoking cessation class that meets once a week.
Classes are small, interactive groups, so you can get support from others who are going through the quitting process right along with you!

Freedom From Smoking
The American Lung Association's Freedom From Smoking® program is for individuals who are ready to quit smoking now. Because most people know that smoking is dangerous to their health, the program focuses almost exclusively on how to quit, not why to quit. Because no single quit smoking technique is effective for all smokers, the program includes a comprehensive variety of evidence-based cessation techniques. The program offers a structured, systematic approach to quitting and its positive messaging emphasizes the benefits of better health.
Evaluation studies have shown that individuals who participate in Freedom From Smoking®:
- Experience immediate health benefits •Learn to address the physical, mental and social aspects of their addiction •Are 6 x more likely to be smokefree one year later than those who quit on their own.
- When combined with smoking cessation medication, up to 60 % of participants report having quit smoking by the end of the program.
Each participant will receive a copy of the Freedom From Smoking participant workbook that provides tools each week to help them in their journey towards quit, along with a “QUIT KIT” during week four to prepare them for the challenge of the quit day! The cost of the class is $25 per participant for the entire seven week session, and scholarships are available if needed. Oregon Health Plan participants should check with the facilitator regarding fee requirements.
Once a smoker has decided to quit, he or she is more likely to be successful when friends, family, and co-workers are supportive. Here are some tips for you as a supporter:
- Help them set a quit date and stick to it
- Help them think of reasons to quit and stay quit
- Ask how you can be most helpful-- quitting is different for every smoker. Some want consistent encouragement, while others want to avoid the topic.
- Offer to call or visit, especially when a tough situation comes up
- NO nagging, scolding, or preaching
- Tell them how proud you are of them for quitting
- Give praise and rewards for milestones-- for making it a day, week, month, 6 months, a year without smoking. Rewards can be very simple and do not need to cost money
- If you are a smoker you can still help your friend/family member quit. Don't smoke around them or offer them cigarettes
- Remember, quitting takes practice and even if they weren't successful before, don't hang that over their heads
- Attend a Freedom from Smoking class with your friend/family member so you can learn the tools they are learning so you can be even more effective as a support system.
Freedom from Smoking classes are brought to you in partnership by Cascade Health Alliance, Sky Lakes Medical Center, and Klamath Basin Behavioral Health. Klamath Open Door also offers one on one cessation counseling.
