Cigarette Litter Prevention in Downtown Klamath Falls
In May 2020, Keep America Beautiful® awarded Blue Zones Project® a 2020 Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) grant to help purchase cigarette litter receptacles for downtown Klamath Falls.
The CLPP, created by Keep America Beautiful in 2002, is the nation's largest program aimed at eliminating cigarette butt and cigar tip litter. Since its inception, the program has been implemented in more than 1,800 urban, suburban, and rural communities nationwide. Over the past decade, participating communities have consistently cut cigarette butt litter by 50 percent based on local measurements taken in the first four months to six months after program implementation.
The Blue Zones Project Tobacco Committee, working alongside City of Klamath Falls and Klamath Falls Downtown Association has selected 9 sites in the downtown corridor for cigarette butt receptacles to be placed.
In 2019 and 2020 tobacco litter clean-up efforts, the Blue Zones Project Tobacco Committee picked up a total of 13,616 cigarette butts in downtown Klamath Falls. Over the course 2020 and 2021, they will continue to assess the amount of cigarette butts found both on the sidewalk and in the receptacles to assess the effectiveness of the program.
The cigarette butts collected in the receptacles will be sent to TerraCycle, a non-profit company that specializes in re-purposing unique waste that typically does not have a local recycling program.
